Literature and Fiction
W.H. Auden & Louis MacNeice Letters from Iceland (Faber & Faber). Amusing and unorthodox travelogue, the result of a summer journey the young poets undertook through Iceland in 1936. Especially enjoyable are the irreverent comments about local people, politicians and literature. Gudbergur Bergsson The Swan (Mare's Nest). The story of a young girl sent to a country farm to serve her probation for shoplifting - a characteristic Icelandic sentence. Here she becomes torn between ancient tradition and new attitudes, but by submitting to the inevitable restraints of remote rural life she finds a new kind of freedom. Mark Cawardine Iceland Nature's Meeting Place (Iceland Review). Plenty of colour photos and maps in this wildlife guide which provides useful information for the amateur naturalist. Advice, too, on where to go to see individual species of birds. Eirik the Red and other Iceland Sagas (Oxford University Press). The tale of one of Iceland's most notorious Viking heros, whose son went on to discover North America. Full of blood and guts and a real page turner. Robert Kellog & Jane Smiley The Sagas of Icelanders (Allen Lane-Penguin). Hefty compendium of a dozen key sagas, including Laxdaela and Egil's but strangely omitting that of Njal. A few less well-known short tales and the introduction also make interesting reading. Halldor Laxness Independent People (Vintage). Excellent novel by Iceland's Nobel Prize winning author about the toils and troubles of sheep-farmer Bjartur to live free and unbeholden to any man - only to see his one and only daughter live unbeholden to him. Magnus Magnusson (ed) Njal's Saga (Penguin). The longest of all the sagas, this is a thoroughly compelling, visceral account of the schemings and characters involved in a fifty-year medieval blood feud. Tim Moore Frost on my Moustache (Abacus Paperback). Highly enjoyable account of the author's attempts to follow in the footsteps of adventurer Lord Dufferin, who sailed to Iceland in 1856. A critical and well-observed account of the Icelandic nation makes this book a must-read. David Roberts Iceland Land of the Sagas (Villard). Beautiful glossy pictures by photographer Jon Krakauer accompany the rich text in this coffee-table book of Iceland. Snori Sturlusson Egil's Saga (Penguin). A powerful and lucid narrative - few of the Icelandic sagas can match this one for the vivid presence of the central figure, Egil . Snorri Sturlusson King Harald's Saga (Penguin). Part of the Heimskringla, recording the turbulent life of King Harald of Norway, felled in battle at Stamford Bridge, in Yorkshire, when invading England in 1066, just three weeks before the Battle of Hastings - had he won, English history might have been very different. por Vilhjalmsson Justice Undone (Mare's Nest). Asmundur, a magistrate, travels into the remote Icelandic wilderness to hear his first case, a charge of incest and infanticide. Haunted by an ancient drowning and his own troubled past, he is tested to the limit during his time among desperate people in a desolate landscape.
