Basic Costs
The best way to minimize costs in Iceland is to be as self-sufficient as possible, and bring in full camping equipment - or at least a sleeping bag for the cheapest unfurnished hostel-style beds - and make use of the various bus passes on offer . A Hostelling International Card will also get you a few hundred kronur a night off official Youth Hostel rates. Bear in mind too that seasons affect costs: places to stay and car-rental agencies drop their prices between October and May, though at that time inexpensive summer-only accommodation will be shut, campsites will probably be under snow, and bus services are infrequent or suspended. Taking all this into account, budget travellers can keep daily costs down by camping out every night - mixing campsites with free camping in the wilds - using a bus pass and cooking for themselves, keeping average daily costs for accommodation, travel and food down to around 3000kr (though cyclists can cut this in half) a day. Throw in a few nights in hostel-style accommodation and the occasional pizza and you're looking at 4000kr. Mid-range travel still means using a bus pass to get around, but, favouring hostels and eating out cheaply most of the time, this will set you back about 6000kr a day. Staying only in guesthouses or hotels and eating in restaurants for every meal means that you're looking at daily expenses of anything upwards of 12,000kr. If you need to car rental at any stage, then you can add at least another 5500kr a day, plus fuel . None of the above takes into account additional costs for entertainment such as tours, entry fees, drinking (an expensive pastime in Iceland) , or alternative transport such as flights and ferries, for which we've given prices in the guide. If you do incur any serious expenses - or even just buy a souvenir woollen sweater - take advantage of the fact that visitors can get a partial Value-Added Tax, or VAT refund on purchases exceeding 4000kr, provided departure from Iceland is within 30 days of the purchase. The VAT itself totals 24.5 percent of the cost price, though the refund is only 15 percent. You fill out a form at the time of purchase and hand it over with all reciepts at the currency-exchange booth upstairs by the duty-free shop at Keflavik airport , where you'll receive your refund in cash; you can ask for this in any currency. If you leave by ferry from Seydisfjordur , get your form stamped at customs and then apply for a refund within three months through Icelandic Tax-free Shopping, PO Box 1200, 235 Keflavik, Iceland.
