Getting There From North America
From North America, Iceland is only served by Icelandair, Iceland's national carrier, who fly out of a handful of airports in the US but just the one in Canada. All flights go to Keflavik international airport, near Reykjavik, the main point of entry for Iceland. Fares depend on what time of year you fly: they're most expensive during high season (roughly June-Aug and around Christmas and New Year) and are cheapest during low season (Nov-March, excluding Christmas and New Year); the remaining months are classified as shoulder season , with fares somewhere in between. From the US Icelandair flights go daily direct to Reykjavik from New York (US$545 high season, US$298 low season; 5hr), Baltimore (US$545/298; 5hr), Boston (US$545/298; 5hr); six times weekly from Minneapolis (US$725/348; 6hr); and twice weekly from Orlando (US$725/348; 6hr). From Canada , they operate three weekly services from Halifax (Nova Scotia) only (CAN$1400/725; 4hr). Air Canada offers daily flights to Halifax from Montreal (CAN$180; 1hr 20min), Toronto (CAN$255; 2hr) and Vancouver (CAN$482; 5hr 40min) You can normally cut costs by going through a specialist flight agent - either a consolidator , who buys up blocks of tickets from the airlines and sells them at a discount, or a discount agent , who in addition to dealing with discounted flights may also offer special student and youth fares and a range of other travel-related services such as travel insurance, car rental, tours and the like. Bear in mind, though, that penalties for changing your plans on discounted tickets can be stiff. Remember too that these companies make their money by dealing in bulk - don't expect them to answer lots of questions. If you travel a lot, discount travel clubs are another option - the annual membership fee may be worth it for benefits such as cut-price air tickets and car rental. Don't automatically assume that tickets purchased through a travel specialist will be cheapest - once you get a quote, check with the airlines and you may turn up an even better deal. Be advised also that the pool of travel companies is swimming with sharks - exercise caution and never deal with a company that demands cash up front or refuses to accept payment by credit card. Students might be able to find cheaper flights through the major student travel agencies, such as Council Travel, STA Travel or, for Canadian students, Travel CUTS . Another source of cheap air fares is the Internet ; there are a number of Web sites where you can look up fares and even book tickets, such as Airtreks, at www.airtreks.com , specialize in RTW tickets and have a helpful interactive Web site. Also try Travelocity at www.travelocity.com , FLIFO Cyber Travel Agent at www.flifo.com , or make a bid for a fare at www.priceline.com .
