Csopak

The village of CSOPAK , 9km down Route 71 towards Balatonfured, has made a name for itself in recent years for its wine , and this is the main reason for visiting. Arriving by train, walk up the main street, Kossuth utca, to the old village, or, to get to the strand and the resort area, walk across Route 71 and then along Furdo utca; the ferry is a couple of minutes' walk beyond. The only tourist office is Csopaktourist at Veszpremi ut 33, in the old village near the top of Kossuth utca (June-Aug daily 8am-8pm; tel & fax 87/455-025, www.csopaktourist.hu ).

There are numerous wine cellars around the old village, and many houses advertise dens where you can pop in to taste - and buy - the local hock. Csopak wines are mainly white, of which the best-known is Olaszrizling ; most locals sell it straight from the barrel. The co-operative Csopak Kistermeloi Pinceszovetkezet bottles the wines of a thousand small vineyards in the area and sells them at the large factory-like building behind Csopaktourist (Mon-Thurs 7.30am-3pm, Fri 7.30am-2pm, Sat 8am-noon). Smaller cellars, where you can also eat as you taste the wines, include the Linczy Pince at Berekhati utca 34, a few minutes' walk up from the train station (May-Oct daily 11am-11pm), and the Soptei Pince at Istenfia utca 5, fifteen minutes' walk west along Furedi utca (June to mid-Oct daily 11am-11pm). Csopak's Wine Week ( Borhet ) takes place in the third week of August, with wine, singing and dancing down by the waterfront at the entrance to the strand .

Accommodation is available down near the waterfront at the Rozmaring Panzio , a series of low buildings spread over large pleasant grounds by the strand at Ifjusag setany 4 (tel & fax 87/446-583; 5000-7000Ft; May-Sept) - there is also a small camping area here. The Youth Resort , a large complex a few minutes' walk east of the strand at Sport utca 9 ( Ifjusagi Udulo ; tel 87/446-505; 3000-7000Ft; May-Sept; no IH discounts in July & Aug), has rooms with showers, and sports facilities to cater for the big groups that stay here; while the Hotel

Piroska next door at Sport utca 5-7 (tel 87/446-576; 7000-10,000Ft; mid-May to mid-Sept) is outwardly unappealing but has nice rooms with balconies overlooking the gardens. Two pleasant places to eat , both with outside seating and serving traditional Hungarian cuisine, are the Dobo Restaurant at the top of Kossuth utca near Csopaktourist, and the Malom Csarda in an old watermill ten minutes' walk up at Veszpremi ut 3, on the northern edge of the village (daily 11am-11pm).
