Whether you describe them as mountains or hills, the Pilis range ( Pilis hegyseg ), behind the west bank, offers lots of scope for hiking amidst lovely scenery. The beech and oak woods on these limestone slopes are most beautiful in the autumn, but there's a possibility of sighting red deer or wild boar at any time of year. Ruined monasteries and lodges attest to the hermits of the Order of St Paul and the royal hunting parties who frequented the hills in medieval times. The Pilis is directly accessible by bus from Esztergom, Pomaz (near Szentendre) or the Arpad hid terminus in Budapest, or you can hike up by various routes - from the Nagy-Villam Tower at Visegrad, or from Domos, 6km west of Visegrad. If you're planning any walking, buy a map of the Pilis in Budapest or the Danube Bend towns, which shows the paths ( turistaut/foldut ), caves ( barlang ), and rain shelters ( esohaz ) throughout the highlands.
