VACRATOT , 35km from the centre of Budapest in the hinterland of Vac, has one of Hungary's best-known Botanical Gardens (daily: April-Sept 8am-6pm; Oct-March 8am-4pm; 160Ft). Founded in the 1870s by Count Vigyazo, it was subsequently bequeathed by him to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Complete with waterfalls and mock ruins, the garden contains thousands of different trees and shrubs from around the world, covering 2.3 square kilometres and taking a good two hours to walk round. On some Saturday evenings in the summer, concerts are held on the lawns in front of the former manor house, with a backdrop of tall copper beeches on one side and a lake on the other. Tickets are available from the Filharmonia ticket office in Budapest. Motorists can reach Vacratot from Budapest by turning east off Route 2, north of Szodliget (about 5km before Vac). The village is otherwise accessible by train from Nyugati Station in Budapest, with a bus going from the station to the gardens (1hr 30min); by bus from the northern end of the blue metro (Ujpest) in Budapest; or by bus or train from Vac
