The Erzsebetvaros (Elizabeth Town) or VII district, between Andrassy and Rakoczi ut, is mainly residential, composed of nineteenth-century buildings whose bullet-scarred facades, adorned with wrought-ironwork, conceal a warren of dwellings and leafy courtyards. It is also traditionally the Jewish quarter of the city, which was transformed into a ghetto and nearly wiped out during the Nazi occupation of 1944-45, but has miraculously retained its cultural identity. There is no better part of Pest to wander around, savouring the atmosphere and discovering things for yourself. Approaching the area from Deak ter, as most people do, the first landmark is the Dohany utca (Tobacco Street) Synagogue, just off Karoly korut.
