The Terezvaros (Theresa Town), or VI district, bordered by Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut and Kiraly utca, was laid out in the late nineteenth century and heavily influenced by Haussmann's redevelopment of Paris. At that time it was one of the smartest districts in the city - especially around the Varosliget (City Park) - but later much of the area became run-down and deprived. Although the villas near the park have recovered their value, the much touted "Hungarian Broadway" on Nagymezo utca - which cuts across the main avenue, Andrassy ut - sees cafe society rubbing shoulders with winos and outcasts.
