The Parizsi Udvar is just one of several impressive buildings round Ferenciek tere , although none can offset the fact that the square is dominated by a three-lane highway running from the Erzsebet hid to Keleti Station. The bridge ramp runs down between twin fin-de-siecle office buildings called the Klotild and Matilde Palaces after two Habsburg princesses of that era. The square itself is named after the Franciscan Church on the corner of Kossuth utca, whose facade bears a relief recalling the Great Flood of 1838, which killed over 400 citizens. More would have died were it not for Baron Miklos Wesselenyi, who rescued scores of people in his boat, as depicted on the plaque. Walking southwards from the church you come to another thoroughfare, initially named after Count Mihaly Karolyi, the liberal politician whose birthplace at no. 16 now houses the Petofi Literary Museum ( Petofi Irodalmi Muzeum ; Tues-Sun 10am-6pm; 250Ft), showcasing the personal effects of Petofi and other Hungarian writers. Concerts are held in the courtyard here in the summer. Heading on along Kecskemeti utca, past the ELTE law faculty that's the Hungarian equivalent of Oxbridge or Harvard for future high-fliers, a right turn into Szerb utca will bring you to the Serbian Orthodox Church , built by Serbian artisans and merchants who settled here after the Turks were driven out. Secluded in a garden, it is only open for High Mass (Sun 10.30-11.45am), when the singing of the liturgy, the clouds of incense and flickering candles create a powerful atmosphere. A block or so south, part of the medieval wall of Pest can be seen on the corner of Bastya utca and Veres Palne utca.
