The area north from Batthyany ter to the Kiraly Baths (strictly speaking part of the Vizivaros) can be reached by heading up Fo utca, past the gloomy premises of the Military Court of Justice (nos. 70-72), where Imre Nagy and other leaders of the 1956 Uprising were tried and executed in 1958. The square outside has now been renamed after Nagy, whose body lay in an unmarked grave in the New Public Cemetery for over thirty years, and makes a suitably emollient site for the new Foreign Ministry building. You can identify the Kiraly Baths (men: Mon, Wed & Fri 9am-8pm; women Tues & Thurs same hours, Sat 6.30am-noon; 600Ft) at Fo utca 82-86 by the four copper cupolas, shaped like tortoise shells, poking from its eighteenth-century facade. The octagonal pool - lit by star-shaped apertures in the dome - was built by the Turks in 1570 for the Buda garrison. The baths' name, meaning "king", comes from that of the Konig family who owned them in the eighteenth century. The baths have become a major meeting place for gay men. A couple of blocks further north, Bem ter was named after the Polish general Joseph Bem, who fought for the Hungarians in the 1849 War of Independence. Traditionally a site for demonstrations, it was here that crowds assembled on October 23, 1956, prior to marching on parliament, bearing Hungarian flags with the hammer and sickle cut out, hours before the Uprising. The square was also the focus for peace demonstrations and protests against the Nagymaros Dam during the 1980s. At Bem utca 20, 200m west from the square, the Foundry Museum ( Ontodei Muzeum ; Tues-Sun 9am-4pm; 150Ft) is housed in the ironworks founded by Abraham Ganz in 1844, which grew into a massive industrial complex. The huge ladles and jib-cranes are still in their original setting, while the museum's collection includes some fine cast-iron stoves.
