Travel Details
Following the recent shake-ups in the Greek sea-transport industry, all ferry services out of Volos and Ayios Konstandinos to the northern Sporades, as well as hydrofoils, are run solely by Hellenic (Minoan) Flying Dolphins or its subsidiaries. Hydrofoils - and the catamaran between Ayios Konstandinos and Thessaloniki, via the islands - only run reliably between early June and mid-September. These craft are, as ever, pricier than the ferries, but cut journey times virtually in half. Kymi-to-Skyros is another, overpriced monopoly sailing served by a single ferry. SKIATHOS, SKOPELOS AND ALONISSOS Ferries NB Departure frequencies given are for the June-to-mid-Sept period, and are valid in reverse sense. Ayios Konstandinos to: Skiathos (2-3 daily; 3hr); Skopelos (1-2 daily; 5hr); Alonissos (1 daily, 6hr). Volos to: Skiathos (3-4 daily; 3hr); Skopelos (2-3 daily; 4hr); Alonissos (1-2 daily; 5hr). NB This is the most consistent service out of season, and always the cheapest. Catamaran Daily from July to mid-Sept, and 5 times weekly in June, there's a catamaran which typically leaves Thessaloniki at 1.45pm, calls at Alonissos, Skopelos and Skiathos between 4.20 and 5.20pm, doubling back from Ayios Konstandinos at 6.30pm through all these islands in reverse, arriving back in Thessaloniki just before midnight. This is a small "Flying Cat" and no vehicles are carried. Hydrofoils Ayios Konstandinos to: Skiathos, Glossa, Skopelos and Alonissos (1 daily at 10am; sets off from Alonissos same day at 6.30am). Trikeri (Pilion) to: Volos, Skiathos, Skopelos (both ports) and Alonissos (1-2 daily). Paleo Trikeri Island to: Volos, Skiathos, Skopelos (both ports) and Alonissos (1 daily) Volos to: Skiathos, Skopelos Town (4-5 daily); Glossa, Alonissos (2-3 daily). Flights Athens to: Skiathos (mid-June to mid-Sept 1 daily, otherwise 3 weekly; 50min). SKYROS Ferries Skyros is served from Kymi (2hr) by conventional ferry, the Lykomidis . Services are at least twice daily mid-June to mid-Sept (usually at around 11am and 5-6pm), once daily (6-7pm) the rest of the year; there may be an additional 9pm boat at summer weekends - tel 02220/22 522 for current information. There is a connecting bus service for the late-afternoon boat, from the Liossion 260 terminal in Athens (departs 10am & 2.45pm). Once or twice a week in July and Aug only, there is a rather useful long-haul ferry connecting Skyros with Skiathos and Thessaloniki to the north, and Iraklio (Crete) to the far south, via Syros, Paros, Mykonos and Thira in the Cyclades; this is typically run by G&A Ferries. Flights Athens to: Skyros (mid-June to mid-Sept 2 weekly; 40min). EVVIA Buses Athens (Liossion 260 terminal) to: Halkidha (every 30min 5.30am-9.30pm; 1hr 30min); Kymi (5 daily; 3hr 15min). Ferries Arkitsa to: Loutra Edhipsou (at least hourly July-Sept 15, every 1-2hr otherwise, last at 10-11pm/8-9pm; 45min). Ayia Marina to: Nea Styra (summer 12-14 daily; 45min); Alymyropotamos dock (summer 1 daily; 45min). Glyfa to: Ayiokambos (8-11 daily summer, 4 in winter; last sailing at 8.30pm/5pm; 30min). NB Connecting buses from Athens run to Rafina (every 30min; 1hr), Ayia Marina (5 daily; 1hr 15min) and Skala Oropou (hourly; 1hr 30min) all from the Mavromateon terminal, and to Arkitsa and Glyfa from the Liossion 260 terminal.
