The most remote of the Sporades, Alonissos is also, at first sight, the least attractive, owing to an unfortunate recent history. The vineyards were wiped out by disease in 1950, and the hora was damaged by an earthquake in 1965. Although its houses were mostly repairable, lack of water, combined with corruption and the social control policies of the new junta, were instrumental in the transfer of virtually the entire population down to the previously unimportant anchorage of Patitiri. The result is a little soulless, but what charm may be lacking in the built environment on the coast is made up for by the hospitality of the islanders.
