NEAPOLI is a mix of old buildings and modern Greek concrete behind a grey-sand beach - and mainly of interest for its ferry and hydrofoil connections. For such an out-of-the-way place, it is surprisingly developed, catering mostly to Greek holiday-makers. Besides rooms, there are three modest hotels : Aivali (tel 07340/22 287; ?34-42) and Arsenakos (tel 07340/22 991; ?34-42) on the seafront and, just behind, the newer, friendly Vergina (tel 07340/23 443; ?24-33) with fridges in the rooms; all may need to be booked ahead in summer. If you are waiting for the ferry or hydrofoil, you can eat extremely well at To Konaki tou Zaharia , by the bridge on the seafront, or have a breakfast snack of tasty, freshly cooked octopus at the Kyma ouzeri by the jetty. The agency for the Kythira ferry and hydrofoil is Alexandrakis (tel 07340/22 940, fax 22 071), between the jetty and the bridge. Neapoli has three banks; taxis can be ordered on 07340/22 590; and the KTEL bus office is on Dhimokratias, opposite the bus park. Neapoli beach extends northwest to the village of Vinglafia and the recently upgraded harbour of Pounda, which has between five and fifteen daily ferry crossings (tel 07340/61 117, fax 22 897; 10min; ?2) over the short strait to the islet of Elafonissos. Nearby Lake Strongyli, south of Ayios Yeoryios, is a nature reserve.
Bus Gythio/Neapolistefano says "is there a direct bus connection from Gythion to Neapolis, in order to take the boat to Kithira?"
