The isolated southeasternmost "finger" of the Peloponnese below Monemvasia,

locally known as Vatika, is little visited by tourists, except for the area around Neapoli , the farthest town south in mainland Greece, which offers access to the islet of Elafonissos, just offshore, and to the larger islands of Kythira and Andikyithira, midway to Crete. From Monemvasia the southerly route high over the central ridge via Elliniko village is the slower but more attractive of the two roads to Neapoli - although the other, longer route is being widened and straightened.
