PYLOS is a little like a small-scale, less sophisticated Nafplio - quite a stylish town for rural Messinia. It is guarded by a pair of medieval castles and occupies a superb position on one of the finest natural harbours in Greece, the landlocked Navarino Bay . Given the town's romantic associations with the Battle of Navarino, and, more anciently, with Homer's "sandy Pylos", the domain of "wise King Nestor" whose palace has been identified 16km to the north, it makes a great base for exploring this part of the Peloponnese, particularly if equipped with a car or scooter - both of which can be rented here. Relying on public transport you'll find the long afternoon gaps in services make complex day-trips impractical.
RunningMikjael Mylonas says "A great pass time of mine is to run from korifasion to pylos. make sure you bring with you a good pair of jogging shoes. It is about 12 kms. When you get to Pylos make sure you let the people know that you just ran from korifasion. After a run like that a good lukoumi would hit the spot and of course, drink lots of water. You know what, to think of it...instead of a loukoumi, try some dried figs with a hand full of almonds and a glass of orange juice with lots of water. There, I am sure you will enjoy yourself. Ask for Visinatha, it is an old favorite drink of mine. It is cherry juice, I don't know if it still exists."
