Arcadia (Arkadhia in modern Greek), the heartland province of the Peloponnese, lives up to its name. It contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in Greece: verdant and dramatic hills crowned by a string of medieval towns, and the occasional Classical antiquity. The best area of all is around Andhritsena, Stemnitsa and Karytena , where walkers are rewarded with the luxuriant (and rarely visited) Lousios gorge , and archeology buffs by the remote, though permanently covered, Temple of Bassae (Apollo Epikourios). En route, if approaching from Tripoli , you may also be tempted by the ancient theatre at Megalopoli .
