Lefkadha has four satellite islands clustered off its east coast, although only one, Meganissi , the largest and most interesting, is accessible. Skorpios , owned by the Onassis family, fields armed guards to deter visitors. Madhouri , owned by the family of poet Nanos Valaoritis, is private and similarly off-limits, while tiny Sparti is a large scrub-covered rock. Day-trips from Nydhri skirt all three islands, and some stop to allow swimming in coves.
