In total contrast to Poros, the resort of SKALA is a low-rise development set among handsome pines above a few kilometres of good sandy beach. A Roman villa and some mosaics were excavated here in the 1950s, near the site of the Golden Beach Palace rooms, and are open daily to the public. Its faithful return crowd keep Skala busy until well after Poros has closed for the season, and accommodation can be hard to find. There are studios and apartments at Dionysus Rooms (tel 06710/83 283; 34-42), a block south of the high street, and rooms can be found at the Golden Beach Palace (tel 06710/83 327; 43-58) above the beach or through Etam Travel Service (tel 06710/83 101, fax 83 142). The more upmarket Tara Beach Hotel (tel 06710/83 250, fax 83 344, tarabeach@tarabeach.gr ; 73 and upwards) has rooms and individual bungalows in lush gardens on the edge of the beach. Skala boasts a number of good restaurants : the Pines , the Flamingo , and, on the beach, the Paspalis and Sunset . Drinkers head for The Loft cocktail bar and the beachside Pikiona pool-bar.
