At 15km from a point halfway along the Argostoli-Sami road, Mount Enos isn't really a walking option, but roads nearly reach the official 1632-metre summit. The mountain has been declared a national park, to protect the Abies cephalonica firs (named after the island) which clothe the slopes. There are absolutely no facilities on or up to the mountain, but the views from the highest point in the Ionian islands out over its neighbours and the mainland are wonderful. In low season, watch the weather, which can deteriorate with terrifying speed. Not far before the mountain turning, taking a detour towards Frangata is doubly rewarded by the huge and lively Ayios Yerasimos monastery , which hosts two of the island's most important festivals (Aug 15 and Oct 20), and right behind it the Robola winery (8am-8pm in summer), which offers a free self-guided tour and generous wine-tasting.
