Many package travellers will find themselves staying in LASSI , a short bus ride or twenty-minute walk from town. Lassi sprawls unattractively along a busy main road, but it does have good sandy beaches, particularly at Makrys Yialos and Platys Yialos , although they're right under the airport flight path. Beaches such as Avythos are well worth seeking out, although if you're walking beyond Kourkomelata there is a real if occasional risk of being attacked by farm dogs, particularly during the hunting season (Sept 25-Feb 28). You'll have to hitch or take an expensive taxi in most cases. With a scooter, the best inland excursion is to AYIOS YEORYIOS , the medieval Venetian capital of the island. The old town here supported a population of 15,000 until its destruction by an earthquake in the seventeenth century: substantial ruins of its castle (Tues-Sat 8am-8pm, Sun © 2003 by Rough Guides Ltd. as trustee for its Authors. 8am-2pm; ?1.50), now reopened after extensive renovations, churches and houses can be visited on the hill above the modern village of Peratata. Byron lived for a few months in the nearby village of Metaxata and was impressed by the view from the summit in 1823; sadly, as at Messolongi, the house where he stayed no longer exists. Two kilometres south of Ayios Yeoryios is a fine collection of religious icons and frescoes kept in a restored church that was part of the nunnery of Ayios Andhreas.
