Two natural features divide the centre and south of Corfu. The first is the plain of Ropa , whose fertile landscape backs on to some of the best beaches on this coast. Settlements and development stop a little to the south of Paleokastritsa and only resume around Ermones and Pelekas - a quick bus ride across the island from Kerkyra Town. Down to the south, a second dividing point is the Korissia lagoon , the sandy plains and dunes that skirt this natural feature being great places for botanists and ornithologists. Beyond, a single road trails the interior, with sporadic side roads to resorts on either coast. The landscape here is flat, an undistinguished backdrop for a series of increasingly developed beaches and, in the far south, Kavos , Corfu's big youth resort.
