The road from Potamia is lined with dhomatia - and apartment-type accommodation, popular with Germans. A side road some 12km from Limenas takes you down to SKALA POTAMIAS , at the southern end of the bay, where some fairly uninspired tavernas line the harbour front; a road off to the left brings you to sand dunes extending all the way to the far northern end of the bay. An honourable exception amongst the tavernas is Flor International (no sign), at the corner where the bus (hourly 7am-8pm to Limenas) turns around; the Afrodite , a short way along, is also acceptable for mayirefta . Worth a mention also is Eric's Bar on the approach road, where one Stratos Papafilippou has made a career of his uncanny resemblance to footballer Eric Cantona; full English breakfast (of course) available. The best places to stay are either above the plane-shaded traffic turnaround area by the port, beyond the tavernas - where the Hera (tel 05930/61 467; up to ?24), just on the left looking inland, or the Delfini (tel 05930/61 275; up to ?24), 200m straight back, are peaceful but basic - or, if you're prepared to pay rather more, there's the Miramare (tel 05930/77 209; ?73 and upwards), which has a swimming pool among well-manicured gardens, further up the same lane. Alternatively, head north along the shore towards the sandy beach, for rooms , to either side of the Arion (tel 05930/61 486; ?34-42) and Anna (tel 05930/61 070; ?24-33) hotels, which represent the best value hereabouts. The north end of this beach is called Khryssi Ammoudhia ("golden sands"), merely another cluster of tavernas, hotels and a campsite; a direct road (no bus service) spirals the 5km down from Panayia. Once there, you can choose between the self-catering Villa Emerald (tel 05930/61 979; ?59-72) or the Golden Sand (tel 05930/61 771 or 61 209; ?43-58), nearer the sands. The Golden Beach campsite (tel 05930/61 472) is the only official one on this side of the island.
