Some 5km west of Alyki, the convent of Arhangelou Mihail (open reasonable daylight hours) clings spectacularly to a cliff on the seaward side of the road. Though founded in the twelfth century above the spot where a spring had gushed forth, it has been hideously renovated by the nuns, resident here since 1974. A dependency of Filotheou on Mount Athos, its prize relic is a purported nail from the Crucifixion. At the extreme south tip of Thassos, 9km further west, ASTRIS (Astridha) can muster two uninspiring medium-sized hotels, a few rooms and a good beach. Just 1km west is another better but crowded beach, Psili Ammos, with watersports on offer. A few kilometres further, POTOS is the island's prime Germanophone package venue, its centre claustrophobically dense, with the few non-block-booked rooms overlooking cramped alleys. However, the kilometre-long beach is still unspoiled. For a less touristy place to eat, the taverna Iy Mouria remains one of the cheaper and better places and is tucked away at the southern end of the seafront, in a semi-pedestrianized street; next door, Michael's Place has great ice cream and breakfasts. Along the harbourfront a string of varyingly trendy bars and cafes offer viable alternatives. There are plenty of rental outlets for cars , scooters and mountain bikes, including the headquarters of Potos Rent a Car. Pefkari with its manicured beach and namesake pine-grove, 1km west, is essentially an annexe of Potos, with a few mid-range accommodation options such as Prasino Veloudho (tel 05930/52 001, fax 51 232; ?34-42) and the rather more upmarket Thassos (tel 05930/51 596, fax 51 794; ?73 and upwards). The campsite , the Pefkari (tel 05930/51 190; June-Sept), with its attractive wooded location and clean facilities, is one of the best on Thassos.
