From the warmer south flank of the island, with its fertile farmland dotted with olive-groves, there are fine views out to sea - as far as Gokceada on a clear day. Up to three daily buses go from Kamariotissa via the sleepy village of Lakoma as far as PROFITIS ILIAS , an attractive hill village with a number of good tavernas - the best being Paradhisos , with a wonderful terrace - but no accommodation to speak of, except for some basic rooms (?24-42). From Lakoma it is 8km east to aptly named Pahia Ammos ("coarse sand"), a long, clean beach with a taverna-rooms place (tel 05510/94 235; ?34-42) at the west end. The nearest (meagre) supplies are in Lakoma, but this doesn't deter big summer crowds who also arrive by excursion kaikia. These also continue east to Vatos , a secluded and sometimes nudist beach also accessible by land, the Kremasta Nera coastal waterfalls, and finally round to Kipos beach.
