The straits between Samos and Ikaria are speckled with a mini-archipelago of three islets, of which the inhabited ones are Thymena and Fourni. More westerly Thymena has one tiny hillside settlement; a regular kaiki calls at the quay below on its way between Ikaria and Fourni, but there are no tourist facilities, and casual visits are explicitly discouraged. Fourni is home to a huge fishing fleet and one of the more thriving boatyards in the Aegean; thanks to these, and the improvement of the jetty to receive car ferries, its population is stable, unlike so many small Greek islands. The islets were once the lair of Maltese pirates, and indeed many of the islanders have a distinctly North African appearance. The aforementioned kaiki leaves Ikaria at about 1pm several days weekly, stays overnight at Fourni and returns the next morning; another twice-weekly kaiki from Karlovassi, and the larger car ferries which appear every few days, are likewise not tourist excursion boats but exist for the benefit of the islanders. The only practical way to visit Fourni on a day-trip is by using the tourist kaiki Ayios Nikolaos , which leaves Ayios Kirykos daily in season at 10am, and returns from Fourni at 5pm, or on one of the summer morning hydrofoils out of Samos (Vathy or Pythagorio).
