Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
Despite an overwhelming first impression of Euro-bland cuisine, it's easy to eat well and even reasonably in Kos Town, as long as you search inland, away from the harbour. The Australia-Sydney on Vassileos Pavlou opposite the post office is a cheap and cheerful hole-in-the wall with a limited menu of daily dishes where two can eat for under ?15; the Koakon , on Ierou Lohou, at the corner of Amerikis, offers mayirefta in a more salubrious environment without the usual multinational flags and photo-menus; while Noufara at Kanari 67 is carnivore heaven with roast chicken, kondosouvli and the like. Moving up in the world, the nearby Nikolaos O Psaras , on the corner of Alikarnassou and Averof, is the most genuine fish taverna in town, with good orektika preceding mildly pricey seafood. Kos's sole real ouzeri is tiny Pote tin Kyriaki at Pissandhrou 9 (closed Sun, as the name says), which neither wants nor gets many tourists - there's only a Greek sign out, and no menu per se - proprietor Angelos recites the day's fare. Equal to any of these is Ambavris (May-Oct), 800m south out of town by the road from near Casa Romana, in the eponymous village. To order from their English-only a la carte menu is to miss the point of the place; take the hint about "Mezedes" and let the house bring on their best - this changes seasonally but won't much exceed ?19 for six plates, drinks extra. For breakfast , the Central/Kentriko Cafe on Platia Ayia Paraskevis behind the market hall does American pancakes with fresh fruit juices, while you can join the largely Greek crowd at Cafe Aenaos , right under the Defterdar mosque, and people-watch while refilling your Greek coffee from the traditional briki used to brew it up. For snacks or dessert , Fresko Gelateria-Cafe , on the corner of Kleopatras and Ioannidhi, serves crepes and waffles in the morning, sticky cakes or decadent own-made ice cream later on. For a convivial drink on the water, try long-lived Blues Brothers on Akti Koundouriotou, near the port police; equally durable music bars with dance floors include Four Roses on the corner of Arseniou and Vassileos Yeoryiou, and Beach Boys at Kanari 57. If you prefer loud techno and house, look no further than the "Pub Lanes", officially Nafklirou and Dhiakou; every address is a bar, whose identity tends to change each season, so just choose according to the crowd and the noise level. Otherwise there is one active cinema , the Orfeas, with summer and winter (Oct-May) premises; the indoor premises also hosts concerts and other special events.
