Practicalities
Large ferries and catamarans anchor just outside the harbour at a special jetty by one corner of the castle; excursion boats to neighbouring islands sail right in and dock all along Akti Koundouriotou. Hydrofoils tie up south of the castle at their own berth, on Akti Miaouli. Virtually all ferry and excursion boat agents sit within 50m of each other at the intersection of pedestrianized Vassileos Pavlou and the waterfront. Among the more helpful and genuinely representative of ferries and hydrofoils, not just expensive excursions, are Adris Nissia at Vassileos Pavlou 2, and Exas at Andoni Ioannidhi 4 (tel 02420/29 900). If you just want to clear out, Aeolos Travel at Annettas Laoumtzi 8 (tel 02420/26 203) often has stray one-way charter seats back to the UK. The airport is 24km southwest of Kos Town in the centre of the island; an Olympic Airways shuttle bus (?3) meets Olympic flights for a transfer to the town terminal, but if you arrive on any other flight you'll have to either take a taxi or head towards the giant roundabout outside the airport gate and find an orange-and-cream-coloured KTEL bus - they run from here to Mastihari, Kardhamena and Kefalos as well as Kos Town. The KTEL terminal in town is a series of stops around a triangular park 400m back from the water, with an info booth adjacent at Kleopatras 7 (tickets on the bus). The municipality also runs a frequent local bus service, DEAS, through the beach suburbs and up to the Asklepion, with a ticket and information office at Akti Koundouriotou 7. Push- or mountain-bike rental are popular options for getting around, given the island's relative flatness; if you want a motor scooter , try Moto Harley at Kanari, corner Neomartyrou Khristou, while Autorent/Helen's at Apostolou Pavlou 31 (tel 02420/28 882 or 094/4450062) or in Psalidhi suburb, at both the Ramira and Okeanis hotels, has a reputation for good-condition cars , as does Marion at Vasileos Yeoryiou 1 (tel 02420/26 293). The municipal tourist office at Vassileos Yeoryiou 3 (July & Aug daily 8am-9pm; May & June, Sept & Oct Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 8am-3pm; Nov-April Mon-Fri 8am-3pm) keeps stocks of local maps, bus timetables and ferry schedules (the latter not to be trusted implicitly). For more involved information, head for the News Stand book store and newsagent just behind the archeological museum on Platia Kazouli. No fewer than six banks have cash dispensers, while the post office is at Vassileos Pavlou 14. internet cafes include Cafe del Mare at Megalou Alexandhrou 4 (the best equipped), or Taurus at Mandhilara 9. Laundries include Happy Wash at Mitropoleos 20, Laundry Center on Mandhilara 56 and Laundromat Center at Alikarnassou 124.
