If you're looking for anything resembling a deserted beach near the capital, you'll need to make use of the DEAS bus line connecting the various resorts to either side of town, or else rent a vehicle; pedal-bikes can take advantage of the cycle paths extending as far east as Cape Psalidhi. Closest is Lambi , 3km north towards Cape Skandhari with its military watchpoint, the last vestige of a vast army camp which has deferred to the demands of tourism - and supposed intra-NATO amity. The bus line usually terminates at Ayios Fokas, 8km southeast of Kos Town, but sometimes continues an extra 4km to unusual and remote Bros Therma (last service around 6pm); if you make the trip with your own transport be prepared to negotiate a rough dirt track for the final kilometre. Bros Therma is known for its hot springs - best experienced at sunset or after - which issue from a grotto and flow through a trench into a shoreline pool protected by boulders, heating the seawater to an enjoyable temperature. Winter storms typically disperse the boulder wall, rebuilt every April, so that the pool changes from year to year. Just adjacent, the long-running Psarotaverna Therma does affordable seafood - especially parrotfish, swordfish and tuna, though the rest of the menu is unmemorable.
