One of the more promoted local boat excursions visits Alimnia (Alimia) islet , roughly halfway between Halki and Rhodes. Despite more well-water and greenery and a better harbour than Halki's, the deserted village here, overlooked by a few palm trees and yet another Knights' castle, was completely abandoned by the 1960s. The locals were initially deported during World War II after they admitted to assisting British commandos sent in April 1944 to sabotage the enemy submarines who used the deep harbour here. The seven commandos themselves were captured on the spot by the Nazis, bundled off first to Rhodes, then to Thessaloniki, where six were summarily executed as spies rather than regular prisoners of war; future Austrian premier and UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim allegedly countersigned their death sentences. Interesting history acknowledged, Alimnia is probably not a place you'd want to be stuck for an entire day. Excursions on offer are pricey (about ?20.50, picnic lunch included), beach space very limited, the castle a hot, 45-minute walk up (the best thing to do here) and the crumbling village behind its salt marsh unedifying. If you snorkel in the outer bay beyond little Ayios Minas monastery, you might glimpse outlines of the Italian-built submarine pens to one side of the deep bay. The former inhabitants only show up to graze livestock, or on the date of the annual festival (Ayios Yeoryios)
