West of Kastro-Hora, an hour-plus walk (or mule ride) takes you through a landscape lush with olive trees to Episkopi , where elements of an ancient temple-tomb have been ingeniously incorporated into a seventh-century church - the structure is known formally as the Iroon, though it's now thought to have been a Roman mausoleum rather than a temple of Hera. Ninety minutes from Kastro-Hora, in the opposite direction, lies Paleokastro , the patchy remains of an ancient fortress. The beaches of Ayios Yeoryios and Ayios Nikolaos are reachable by a regular kaiki from Alopronia; the former is a better option because it has the daytime Almira restaurant. It is possible to walk to them, but there is no real path at the later stages. A more feasible journey by foot is to the pebble beach at Ayios Pandelimonas : just under an hour's trail walk southwest of Alopronia, it is the most scenic and sheltered on the island, and is also served by a kaiki in season.
