Sikinos has so small a population that the mule ride or walk up from the port to the village was only replaced by a bus late in the 1980s and, until the new jetty was completed at roughly the same time, it was the last major Greek island where ferry passengers were still taken ashore in launches. With no dramatic characteristics, nor any nightlife to speak of, few foreigners make the short trip over here from neighbouring Ios and Folegandhros or from sporadically connected Paros, Naxos or Thira. There is no bank on the island, but there is a post office up in Kastro-Hora, and you can sometimes change cash at the store in Alopronia.
