Apollonia is a good base from which to start your explorations of remoter Sifnos. You can rent bikes at Moto Apollo, beside the petrol station on the road to Faros, but the island is best explored on foot. Taking the path out from Katavati (the district south of Apollonia) you'll pass, after a few minutes, the beautiful empty monastery of Firayia and - fifteen minutes along the ugly new road - the path climbing up to Ayios Andhreas , where you'll be rewarded with tremendous views over the islands of Syros, Paros, Ios, Folegandhros and Sikinos. Just below the church is an enormous Bronze Age archeological site. Even better is the all-trail walk to Vathy, around three hours from Katavati and reached by bearing right at a signed junction in Katavati. Part way along you can detour on a conspicuous side-trail to the monastery of Profitis Ilias , on the very summit of the island, with a vaulted refectory and extensive views.
