Of the three islets off the coast of Milos, Andimilos is home to a rare species of chamois, Poliegos has more ordinary goats, but only Kimolos has any human habitation. Volcanic like Milos, with the same little lava-built rural cottages, it profits from its geology and used to export chalk ( kimolia in Greek) until the supply was exhausted. Fuller's earth is still extracted locally, and the fine dust of this clay is a familiar sight on the island, where mining still outstrips fishing and farming as an occupation. Rugged and barren in the interior, it has some fertile land on the southeast coast where wells provide water, and this is where the population of about eight hundred is concentrated. Kimolos is sleepy indeed from September to June, and even in August sees few visitors. This is probably just as well, since there are fewer than a hundred beds on the whole island, and little in the way of other amenities
