Kea is the closest of the Cyclades to the mainland and is extremely popular in summer, and at weekends year-round, with Athenians. Their impact is mostly confined to certain small coastal resorts, leaving most of the interior quiet, although there is a preponderance of expensive apartments and villas and not as many good tavernas as you might expect because so many visitors self-cater. Midweek or outside peak season, Kea is a more enticing destination, with its rocky, forbidding perimeter and inland oak and almond groves. It's an excellent destination for those who enjoy a rural ramble. As ancient Keos, the island and its strategic, well-placed harbour supported four cities - a pre-eminence that continued until the nineteenth century when Syros became the main Greek port. Today, tourists account for the sea traffic with regular (in season) ferry connections with Lavrio on the mainland (only a ninety-minute bus ride from Athens), plus useful hydrofoils and ferries to and from Pireas, Syros and Kythnos; there may also be Mega Dolphin services to and from Zea (near Pireas).
