If you take a tour from Iraklion (or one of the resorts), you'll probably visit the Gortys, Festos and Ayia Triadha sites in a day, with a lunchtime swim at Matala thrown in. Doing it by public transport, you'll be forced into a rather more leisurely pace, but there's still no reason why you shouldn't get to all three and reach Matala within the day; if necessary, it's easy enough to hitch the final stretch. Bus services to the Festos site are excellent, with some nine a day to and from Iraklion (fewer run on Sun), five of which continue to or come from Matala; there are also services direct to Ayia Galini. If you're arriving in the afternoon, plan to visit Ayia Triadha first, as it closes early.
