Eastern Crete is dominated by Ayios Nikolaos , and while it is a highly developed resort, by no means all of the east is like this. Far fewer people venture beyond the road south to Ierapetra and into the eastern isthmus, where only Sitia and the famous beach at Vai ever see anything approaching a crowd. Inland, too, there's interest, especially on the extraordinary Lasithi plateau, which is worth a night's stay if only to observe its abidingly rural life.
