The main highway to Korinthos (Corinth) is about as unattractive a road as any in Greece. For the first thirty or so kilometres you have little sense of leaving Athens, whose western suburbs merge into the industrial wastelands of first Elefsina and then Megara. Offshore, almost closing off the bay, is Salamina (ancient Salamis), not a dream island in anyone's book but a nicer escape than it looks, and accessible by ferries from the mainland here at Lakki Kalyirou (and at Perama, near Pireas). A train or bus direct to Korinthos or beyond, though, is perhaps the wisest option. Only the site of ancient Eleusis is in any way a temptation to stop, and even this is strictly for Classical enthusiasts. Drivers should note that the Athens-Korinthos non-toll road is one of the most dangerous in the country, switching from four-lane highway to a rutted two-laner without warning; it is best driven in daytime, or preserve your sanity and pay the toll for the broad motorway higher up the cliff.
