The ruins of RHAMNOUS (Tues-Sun 8.30am-2.30pm; ?1.50) occupy an isolated site above the sea. Among the scattered and overgrown remains is a Doric Temple of Nemesis , goddess of retribution. Pausanias records that the Persians who landed nearby before their defeat incurred her wrath by carrying off a marble block - upon which they intended to commemorate their conquest of Athens. There are also the remains of a smaller temple dedicated to Themis, goddess of justice. Rhamnous can be reached just five times daily by bus from the Mavromateon terminal; the village name to look for is Kato Souli.
