The port of RAFINA has ferries , a catamaran and hydrofoils to a wide assortment of the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and the northeast Aegean, as well as to nearby Evvia. It is connected regularly by bus with Athens: a forty-minute trip (from Mavromateon) through the "gap" in Mount Pendeli. Boats aside, the appeal of the place is mainly gastronomic. Though much of the town has been spoilt by tacky seaside development, the little fishing harbour with its line of roof-terrace seafood restaurants remains one of the most inviting spots on the Attic coast. Of these, Ta Kavouria tou Asimaki , the first as you descend to the harbour from the square, is the cheapest and best. A lunchtime outing is an easy operation, given the frequency of the bus service. Evenings, when it's more fun, you need to arrange your own transport back, or make for the beachside campsite at nearby Kokkino Limanaki. The town's few hotels are often full in summer, so you need to phone ahead to be sure of a room; the best value is the Corali (tel 02940/22 477; ?24-33) located in the central Platia Nikiforou Plastira, while the Avra (tel 02940/22 780, fax 23 320; ?73 and upwards), just down from the square and overlooking the sea, is large and rather overpriced. If you want a swim , the pleasant little bay of Ble Limanaki is just ten minutes' walk north over the headland above the harbour and avoids the pollution of the longer town beach. There is nothing to eat or drink here, though. Alternatively, you can walk the extra fifteen minutes to Kokkino Limanaki , which has a good shady beach and some restaurants and shops.
