The area east of Athens is one of the least visited parts of Attica. The mountain of Imittos (Hymettus) forms an initial barrier, with Kessariani monastery on its cityside flank. Beyond extends the plateau of the Mesoyia (Midland), a gentle landscape whose villages have a quiet renown for their retsina and for their churches, many of which date back to Byzantine times. On towards the coast, there is the remote and beautiful site of ancient Brauron , and the developing resort of Porto Rafti .
