For swimming you need to get clear of the town. Beaches within walking distance are at Ayia Marina (twenty minutes east, with the very pleasant Paradise restaurant), at various spots beyond the Old Harbour, and several other spots half an hour away in either direction. The tempting smaller isle of Spetsopoula , just offshore from Ayia Marina, is off-limits: it's the private property of the heirs of shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. For heading further afield, you'll need to hire a bike or moped , or use the kaikia rides from the Dapia, which run to beaches around the island in summer. A very expensive alternative are water taxis , though they can take up to ten people. Walkers might want to go over the top of the island to Ayii Anaryiri; forest fire has ravaged much of the southern side's pines between Ayia Marina and Ayii Anaryiri, though happily they are growing back. There is a bus service to Ayii Anaryiri from near the Roussos taverna, running several times a day in season. Routes out of town start from beyond the Lazaros taverna, and pass the forest service firewatch tower. Brave the precariously attached steps and you're rewarded with the island's highest and best viewpoint.
