Paloukia Salamina Town and Selinia

By the ferry dock in PALOUKIA is a bus station, with services to the contiguous capital Salamina Town (3km) and beyond, though the large selection of signed destinations can be confusing.

SALAMINA TOWN (also known as Koulouri) is home to 18,000 of the island's 23,000 population. It's a depressing place, with a couple of banks, a fish market and motorway-like traffic. Pretty much uniquely for an island town - and emphasizing the absence of tourists - there is no bike or moped rental outlet, and also no hotel (not that you'd want to stay). Bus services link most points on the island, though information about them is scanty. Iliakti beach is pleasant enough, some 5km to the west.

Buses marked Faneromeni run to the port at the northwest tip of the island, the Voudoro peninsula , where there are ferries across to Lakki Kalomirou, near Megara on the Athens-Korinthos road. En route it passes close by the frescoed seventeenth-century monastery of Faneromeni (6km from Salamina), rather majestically sited above the

gulf.

Around 6km to the south of Paloukia is a third island port, SELINIA , which has connections direct to the Pireas ferry dock (winter 9.30am, summer five crossings daily between 8am and 2.30pm; 30min; ?1.10). It can also be reached direct by bus from Paloukia. This is the main summer resort, with a pleasant waterfront, a bank, several tavernas and two inexpensive hotels, the Akroyali (tel 010/46 73 263; ?24-33) and Votsalakia (tel 010/46 71 334; ?24-33).
