South from Salamina Town, the road edges the coast towards Eandio (6km; regular buses). There are a few tavernas along the way, but the sea vistas are not inspiring. EANDIO , however, is quite a pleasant village, with a little pebble beach and the island's best hotel , the Gabriel (tel 010/46 62 275; ?34-42), which overlooks the bay, whose waters are said to be returning to health, although the Salamina waterfront opposite can be less than sweet-smelling. Two roads continue from Eandio. The one to the southeast runs to the unassuming village resorts of Perani and Paralia (both around 4km from Eandio). The more interesting route is southeast towards Kanakia (8km from Eandio; two buses daily), over the island's pine-covered mountain, and passing (at around 5km) a monastery - dedicated, like most Salamina churches, to Ayios Nikolaos. At the monastery, turn off left to the harbour and small-scale resort of Peristeria (5km). This is a much more attractive settlement than the littered beach and scruffy huts of Kanakia itself
