Salamina is the quickest possible island hop from Athens. Take the Kifissia-Pireas train to the end of the line in Pireas and then one of the green buses marked Perama to the shipyard port of Perama, just west of Pireas, and a ferry (daily 5am-midnight; ?0.40) will whisk you across to the little port of Paloukia in a matter of minutes. The ferry crosses the narrow strait where, in 480 BC, the Greek navy trounced the Persian fleet, despite being outnumbered three to one; this battle is said by some to be more significant than the battle of Marathon, ten years earlier. Alternatively, ferries run from Pireas, next to the Argo-Saronic Flying Dolphins berth (every 30min, 8am-5pm; 45min; ?1.05), calling en route at Ambelakia. On arrival in Paloukia, you won't be rewarded by desirable or isolated beaches - the pollution of Pireas and Athens is a little too close for comfort, although the water has much improved in recent years - but you may escape the capital's smog and city pace.
