Ferries from the Argo-Saronics or from Galatas drop you at POROS , the main town on the island, which rises steeply on three sides of the tiny volcanic Sferia. The harbour and town are picturesque, and the cafes and waterfront lively. Fishermen sell their catches direct from the boat and it is possible to arrange fishing trips. Particular sights are the hilltop clocktower and a small, well-labelled archeological museum (Mon-Sat 9am-3pm; free), with items from the mainland site of Troezen and elsewhere. Near the main ferry dock is the helpful Family Tours (tel 02980/23 743, fax 24 480) which has a variety of rooms available. Also on the waterfront are three other travel agents : Marinos Tours (tel 02980/23 423), sole agents for the Hellas Flying Dolphin hydrofoils and with well-priced local maps, Hellenic Sun Travel (tel 02980/25 901) and Saronic Gulf Travel (tel 02980/24 555). All these agencies exchange money, arrange accommodation in rented rooms and handle tours off the island. If you want to look around on your own, quieter places to stay are up on the hill behind the clocktower, although prices are generally on the high side. To the right of the road to Kalavria you'll find two reasonable hotels: Dimitra (tel 02980/22 697, fax 25 653; ?24-33) and Latsi (tel 02980/22 392; ?24-33). Most of the other hotels are across the canal on Kalavria. Camping is not encouraged anywhere on the island and the nearest official campsite, Kyrayelo , is just west of Galatas. Down on the quayside, among the cafes, bars, creperies and souvenir shops facing Galatas, good-value restaurants include Grill Oasis and Mouragio , at the far end away from the ferry dock. Moskhoyiannis has traditional Greek food in the souvenir lane which runs between the Alpha Bank and the post office square. A well-signed lane, between the Latsi and the school, leads gently up, past the police station and the Ergani weaving shop, to the upper square. Here, by the Ayios Yeoryios cathedral are a cluster of good tavernas: Platanos, Perasma, Dimitris - the last run by a local butcher, so offers excellent meat - and, just beyond, the Kipos ( Garden ). The Lithos bar is nearby and the Korali and Sirocco discos provide nightlife, with both Greek and foreign music. Additional facilities around the waterfront include moped and bicycle rental outlets (you can take either across on boats to the mainland), four banks , a post office , the summer-only Diana cinema and the helpful tourist police (tel 02980/22 462; mid-May to Sept).
