Separated from the mainland by a 450-metre strait, Poros ("the ford") barely qualifies as an island, and far more than any other Argo-Saronic island it is package-tour territory. Its proximity to Pireas also means a weekend Athenian invasion. The island town has character though, and the topography is interesting: Poros is in fact two islands, Sferia (Poros Town) and the much more extensive Kalavria , separated from each other by a shallow engineered canal, which is now silting up. In addition to its regular ferry and hydrofoil connections with Pireas and the other Argo-Saronics, Poros has frequent boats shuttling across from the workaday mainland port of Galatas in the Peloponnese, and there's a car ferry every twenty minutes from near the Naval Academy. These allow for some interesting excursions - locally to the lemon groves of Lemonodhassos, ancient Troezen near Trizina, and the nearby Devil's Bridge. Further afield, day-trips to Nafplio or to performances of ancient drama at the great theatre of Epidaurus are possible by car, or by taking an excursion, available through travel agents in Poros Town.
