FERRIES

From the central harbour at Pireas at least 4 boats daily run to Ayia Marina (1hr) and 11 to Egina (1hr 30min); 1-2 daily to Skala and Mylos (2hr); 4 daily to Poros (3hr 30min); 1-2 daily to Idhra (4hr 30min) and Spetses (5hr 30min). About 4 connections daily between Egina and Poros; 4-5 daily between Egina and Angistri; from Angistri about 4 weekly to Palea Epidhavros, far less frequently to Poros and Methana.

Most of the ferries stop on the Peloponnesian mainland at Methana (between Egina and Poros) and Ermioni (between Idhra and Spetses); it is possible to board them here. Some continue from Spetses to Porto Heli. There are also constant boats between Poros and Galatas (10min) from dawn until late at night, boat-taxis between Spetses and Porto Heli, and 4 daily ferries between Spetses and Kosta.

NB there are more ferries at weekends and fewer out of season (although the service remains good); for Egina and Poros they leave Pireas most frequently between 7.30am and 9am, and 2pm and 4pm. Do not buy a return ticket as it saves no money and limits you to one specific boat. The larger landing-craft ferries are generally less expensive, but the smaller regular boats are somewhat faster. A schedule is posted at the small Port Police kiosk on the quay, and tickets can be purchased at nearby stalls. The general information number for the Argo-Saronic ferries is 010/41 75 382.

FLYING DOLPHIN HYDROFOILS

Approximately hourly services from Akti Tselepi at Pireas to Egina 6am-8pm in season, 7am-7pm out of season (40min); Saronic Dolphins craft for Poros, Idhra and Spetses leave from further southeast on the same quay (4-6 daily, 2hr 30min to Spetses).

All other hydrofoils going beyond Egina leave from the Zea Marina : 4-15 times daily to Poros (1hr), Idhra (1hr 40min) and Spetses (2hr-2hr 30min). All these times depend upon the stops en route, and frequencies vary with the season.

Egina is connected with Methana and Poros 1-3 times a day; Poros, Idhra and Spetses with each other 5-7 times daily. Some hydrofoils also stop at Methana and Ermioni and most of those to Spetses continue to Porto Heli (15min more). This is a junction of the hydrofoil route - in season there is usually one a day onwards to Tolo and Nafplio (and vice versa; 30 and 45min) and another to Monemvasia (2hr). The Monemvasia hydrofoil continues 2-4 days a week (Fri-Sun) to the island of Kythira.

NB Services are heavily reduced out of season, though all the routes between Porto Heli and Pireas still run. Hydrofoils are usually twice as fast and twice as expensive as ordinary

boats, though to Egina the price is little different. You can now buy round-trip tickets to destinations in the Argo-Saronic Gulf. In season, it's not unusual for departures to be fully booked for a day or so at a time.

Details and tickets available from the Hellas Flying Dolphins office in Athens at 2 Vas. Konstandinou (tel 010/75 20 540) or in Pireas at Akti Themistokleous 8 (tel 010/41 99 000). Tickets can be bought at the departure quays on Akti Tselepi in Pireas and at Zea Marina
