The essentially modern resort of SKALA is dominated by many new apartment buildings and hotels with little to distinguish them, spreading west halfway along the north shore of the island. The popular town beach, Angistri's only sandy one, nestles against the protected south shore of this headland, below the big white church. Just inland of the ferry dock is the attractive hotel Yana (tel 02970/91 228; ?24-33), sharing a pool with the Alter Ego self-catering apartments; both are run by the helpful Nektarios (Nick) Panou of Skala Travel (tel 02970/91 356, fax 91 342, nik.panou@otenet.gr ), who can also arrange reservations for other accommodation . On summer weekends you would be well advised to reserve ahead. For food , there's the Neptune taverna in Skala and Alter Ego serves excellent crepes; in Mylos the Sailor and Konaki are recommended. Both mopeds and mountain bikes are available for rent; Limenaria, near the end of the trans-island road, is less than 8km distant, so in cooler weather you can comfortably cross Angistri on foot or by bike. A road to the left of the harbour leads within fifteen minutes to the Angistri Club , with a disco-bar on the rocks above the sea, and the nearby Alkyoni taverna. From there, it's another ten-minutes' walk to the secluded Halikadha pebble beach backed by crumbling cliffs and pine-covered hills; along with Dhragonera, this is the best that the island has to offer, and is clothing-optional. Metohi , the hillside hamlet just above Skala, was once the main village, and in recent years has been completely bought up and restored by foreigners and Athenians; there are no facilities. Ever-spreading Skala threatens in the future to merge with MYLOS (Megalohori), just 1.5km west along the north coast. Once you penetrate a husk of new construction, you find an attractive, traditional Argo-Saronic-style village centre. Although there's no decent beach nearby, it makes an alternative base to Skala, with plenty of rented rooms and some hotels . The Milos Hotel (tel 02970/91 241; ?24-33) is a good, well-positioned choice.
