Angistri , fifteen minutes by catamaran from Egina, is small enough to be overlooked by most island-hoppers, though it is now in many foreign holiday brochures. The island fosters an uneasy coexistence between Athenian and German old-timers, who bought property here years ago, and British newcomers on package trips. Beaches, however, remain better and less crowded than on Egina, and out of season the pine-covered island succumbs to a leisurely village pace, with many islanders still making a living from fishing and farming. Headscarves worn by the old women indicate the islanders' Albanian ancestry, and until recently they still spoke Arvanitika - a dialect of medieval Albanian with Greek accretions - amongst themselves. The Angistri dock in Egina Town is immediately south of the main harbour. Boats and catamarans from Egina and Pireas call at Skala, and possibly at Mylos. From Pireas , a direct ferry runs at least twice daily in season, once a day out of season, taking two hours; the fast catamaran three times a day, via Egina, takes one hour. A water taxi is based in Angistri, but will be more expensive.
