ROLANDSECK , 6km north of central Remagen, has now been absorbed by Remagen. The train station building is now designated the Kunstlerbahnhof (Tues-Sun 10am-5pm; DM5/?2.50), housing a notable collection of works by Hans Arp, along with changing exhibitions of contemporary art. More sculptures by Arp and by Henry Moore can be seen for free on the lawn outside. One of the most famous Rhine legends is closely associated with the vicinity of Rolandseck. In the middle of the Rhine, just beyond the village, is the island of Nonnenwerth , occupied by a former convent. Stricken by grief, he built the Rolandsbogen fortress on the hill above in order to catch occasional glimpses of her. Whatever the veracity of the story, it's well worth climbing up to the ruin, which commands one of the most extensive views of this part of the Rhine, with Bonn and the Siebengebirge immediately to the north.
